This can be achieved by "locking" the group. There is a little lock icon in the context menu of each group. The group turns gray once you click on it.

Restoring groups in a locked state will keep them from being removed

Another option is to use the mouse wheel when clicking on individual links in a group. This will create a new tab of the clicked link without removing it from the group.

You can kinda get around that by pinning the group first before you restore it... though it might be good to have it autoupdate the group when you do stuff in it rather than have it be a fully new instance of a group?
